Apocalypse now.

The Day Before, a survival shooter from Fntastic, is looking very promising, as a mix of the harrowing horror of The Last Of Us and the co-op cohesiveness of The Division.

As per the developer's official description, the game is an "open-world MMO survival set in a deadly, post-pandemic America overrun by flesh-hungry infected and survivors killing each other for food, weapons, and cars." Though it's not known how much of America you'll be able to explore, the storyline also shows that the developer wants to set The Day Before apart from the swathes of zombie apocalypse titles. "You wake up alone in a world you no longer remember, setting out to find answers and the resources to survive," it continues, and the stunning five minute gameplay preview features a gorgeous yet dilapidated world, exciting survival mechanics, nail-biting PvP, and terrifying encounters with the things that lurk in the dark.

Every day will be a struggle between you and your team versus everyone else, be they infected or rival groups eking out an existence at the end of all things. What's more, the setting itself is atmospheric, a snapshot of a time long gone with Christmas trees and hanging lights offering little to illuminate the shadows. The survivor colony is a haven, however, and it's here where players will touch base, trade, and liaise with fellow survivors.

The Day Before challenges players to become "a legend of the new world," offering a realistic arsenal of weapons to slay zombies with, and to hunt down other players before they catch you. Not only are there threats from humans, but Mother Nature will put the player through their paces. There are three survival meters in the corner of the screen, and when a snowstorm rolls in, the temperature one drops like a stone.

It's not all doom and gloom, though, and it's evident that Fntastic have a sense of humour about the world going down the pan. The very first thing we see in the trailer is a newspaper proclaiming that "Billionaires see fortunes rise by 27% during the pandemic," and "Winter is coming." Topical. The two players (who are absolutely voice actors adding their lines to pre-recorded gameplay taken by the developer) strike a balance between banter and Matthew McConaughey impressions, and it appears that proximity chat might be how players detect each other.

At the moment, the game is listed on Steam with no concrete release window. This five-minute gameplay snippet is exceptionally polished, though, and the developer encourages gamers to sign up for the game's newsletter for offers, tips, and more. Good things come to those who wait.
