Though outrage often doesn't solve a lot of issues in games and media, this time it has. Following the announcement that owners of the base PlayStation 4 version of Horizon Forbidden West would not get a free PS5 upgrade forcing them to buy the game twice, Sony has made a U-turn on the decision. This is good news for those of Sony's fans who have not yet been able to afford or get their hands on the new-gen consoles but still want to see Aloy in action when the game hits shops in 2022.
An update was made to the original post about how various editions of Horizon Forbidden West will contain different versions of the final game. Now, an update signed by PlayStation boss Jim Ryan has changed Sony's stance on the game and promises that "Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free."
Here is our most recent look at Horizon Forbidden West...
Additionally, the post has given us an understanding of how upgrades will work in the future. Spoiler alert - they're not free, however, they are a lot cheaper than just buying the game again. The post says: "I also want to confirm today that moving forward, PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 & PS5)-both digital and physical*-will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This will apply to the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7, and any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment."
It's not entirely clear what that means for pricing elsewhere but don't be surprised if you're paying £10 for an upgrade in the UK. At least we get one more game that will upgrade for free before this pricing comes in. So, if you're still loving your PS4 and PS4 Pros, don't hesitate to get Horizon Forbidden West when it releases on February 18, 2022.
