FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, AKA one of the best games of 2019, is getting a massive free update. New modes, outfits, and even an entirely new way to seek help and guidance throughout the punishingly difficult action game will be arriving later this later.
The real headline act here, at least for those of us out there who actively enjoy pain, is Sekiro's new Boss Rush mode. This new feature will allow players to revisit the game's many boss battles individually, or take on a challenging Gauntlet Of Strength in which you attempt to cut down one boss after another.
"Extraordinary foes that once stood in the way of victory can be fought again and again to your heart's content," FromSoftware said in a post on the Sekiro website. The bosses in Sekiro are among the hardest I've ever seen in a video game, so this mode is not to be taken lightly.
Players will also be able to change the appearance of Sekiro's protagonist with with three new outfits. Publisher Activision has already confirmed "Old Ashina Shinobi" and "Tengu," which can be unlocked by playing through the Gauntlet modes. The mysterious third costume can be earned by beating the game. I assume that this one will simply be added to your inventory when the update lands if you've already bested Sekiro.

Last but not least, Sekiro is introducing a feature that you'll be familiar with if you played previous FromSoftware games like Bloodborne and Dark Souls. Remnant recordings are 30-second snippets of gameplay that are sent to other players' worlds and can be paired with a message. Just like in past FromSoftware titles, you can use these messages to guide players towards secrets and offer hints... or trick people into jumping off cliffs to their death. Up to you.
"Share strategies and hints via network to broaden the scope of play," FromSoftware explained. It also sounds like players can rate other Remnants, which favourable scores granting the creator HP recovery. Will this cut down on players mercilessly trolling one another? Probably not, but it's a nice touch.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will get this free update on October 29th, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Some have pointed out the timing implies we could be seeing a next-gen port or upgrade of the game, but we'll have to wait and see. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to start training for the boss rush mode.
