Players got their best look yet at Resident Evil Village during an in-depth livestream last night. The upcoming next-gen survival horror looks like a worthy sequel to 2017's Resident Evil 7, complete a creepy castle and village to explore, terrifying new enemies to face, and tall vampire ladies that will chase you down and slice you apart.

It's all looking very promising, and the best part is we don't have long to wait before we can play. Resident Evil Village lurks onto PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 7 May, 2021. There's also a brand new standalone demo that PlayStation 5 users can get their hands on right now.

Much like the Resident Evil 7 demo from a few years back, Resident Evil Village's Maiden demo is a mini-prequel of sorts that sets up the full adventure, rather than a slice of the final game. As such, you'll get the chance to explore Castle Dimitrescu... and come face-to-face with one or two of the horrors living there. Just remember that unlike in the final game, the Maiden demo will force you to explore without any weapons. You'll want to be extra careful out there.

Maiden is currently only available to download and try out on the PlayStation 5, sadly. The good news is that Capcom confirmed a separate demo for all platforms will be made available at a later date, so sit tight for now. You'll get your turn eventually.

"Starting today, PlayStation 5 owners can get an exclusive sneak peek of the castle area from Resident Evil Village with the Maiden demo," said Capcom. "This standalone experience is separate, but showcases the stunning visuals and 3D Audio that await in the main game. As the Maiden, players will need to rely solely on their wits to make their escape in this tension-filled demo, as they'll have no way to fight or defend themselves."

During the stream Capcom also announced a free multiplayer for Resident Evil Village. The cunningly named Resident Evil RE:Verse is something of an Avengers-style spinoff that brings together characters and locations from across the survival horror's history for... team deathmatches. Not the most Resident Evil-sounding thing, I grant you, but a free mode is a free mode.
