'Resident Evil - Code: Veronica' Is Finally Getting The Remake It Deserves

It's about damn time.

It's been a good few years for Resident Evil. New entries like Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village have been complimented by a couple of excellent remakes. Resident Evil 2 was a stunning return to the series' third-person survival horror roots, while last year's remake of Resident Evil 3 dialed up the action in a gripping game of cat and mouse.

There are more remakes to come, too. We already know that Capcom is working on a new version of Resident Evil 4, although there's some discussion as to whether the 2005 masterpiece really needs an overhaul. One thing most fans agree on is that there is one more classic Resi adventure that's long overdue a ground-up remake: Resident Evil - Code: Veronica.

Take a look at the evolution of Resident Evil below!

Released back in 2000, Resident Evil - Code: Veronica was, arguably, the last true survival horror entry from Capcom before Resident Evil 4 introduced a more action-heavy experience that carried over into the sequels. It was slow, methodical, full of convoluted puzzles, and utterly terrifying.

We've talked before about how we think Code: Veronica should be getting the remake treatment, and while Capcom doesn't have anything official in the works, a group of fans are working hard to bring the cult classic back from the dead.

This upcoming remake is the work of a small group of fans, and you can track their efforts here. The remake aims to be to the original Code: Veronica what the Resident Evil 2 remake was to the 1998 classic, retaining the horror of the original game while adding new environments and an over-the-shoulder perspective.

If that's not your bag, however, the developers are planning to include a "Classic" mode that retains the fixed camera angles of the original game. All this, plus new gameplay mechanics, expanded scenarios, puzzles, and more? I certainly hope they're able to see it through. Take a look at the game in action below, or via this link.

As much as we'd love to get our hopes up, fan projects are an infamously tricky prospect. It wasn't that long ago that Capcom shut down a fan remake of Resident Evil 2, although in that case it was because the company was planning its own version. Maybe this fan attempt will be one of the rare cases that's able to see it through all the way to the end. I know we're all rooting for it.
