Hey, remember that the awesome looking PlayStation 5 mockup which was inspired by the original PlayStation 2 design? Remember that it went on sale and had a messy launch day which ended up with the staff getting threats? Remember the team said they were going to refund everyone after the project was cancelled? Yeah - that's all now a little suspicious because the site has shut down and some customers are still waiting on refunds.
As reported by VGC, the retailer that came up with the PlayStation 2 limited editions of the PlayStation 5, SUP3R5 has now taken its website offline after cancelling all the orders. Not only has the website gone offline, but the Twitter account for the brand has also been deleted. Some customers are still claiming that they have not yet got their refunds from SUP3R5 following the console and controller cancellations, which doesn't help the 'scam' rumours that have plagued the situation since the original sale date.
Originally, when the consoles went on sale SUP3R5 had to apologise after the pre-sales were an "incredibly disappointing, frustrating experience" for all parties involved. But the company has also stressed that it's not a scam, and it's pushing that narrative because they're a small start-up business.
Now with the website shutting down, its online presence disappearing and customers reporting to VGC that they're having to make claims through PayPal rather than having any contact through SUP3R5, perhaps the scam theory was right all along. Not only was the business selling PlayStation 5s, a very rare commodity at the moment, but they were also selling the hardware at a higher price point because of the custom finish.
If the site was a scam, after all, that's a lot of money that SUP3R5 could make through not refunding those who tried purchasing the console. Right now, no one is completely sure if the consoles were ever going to become a reality. It might be naïve to hope people are still going to get refunds but for now, that seems to be the only thing buyers can do.
