Valve boss Gabe Newell has suggested that Steam games could make their way to consoles later this year, hinting that there may be some big announcements on the horizon.
Speaking at a local public school (thanks Reddit user Odysseic), Newell was asked if Steam and its vast library of games - including Valve-published titles - might find their way onto PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

"You will get a better of that by the end of this year," Newell teased, to a chorus of excited murmuring from the assembled crowd. He added that the "answer" wouldn't be quite what anyone was expecting, which is intriguing af. I certainly wouldn't be expecting Steam to come to PS5... is that what you're getting at Newell, you sly old dog?

This isn't the first time we've heard about potential integration between Steam and consoles. Earlier this year, Valve insider Tyler McVicker, claimed that Xbox Game Pass could be integrated into Steam somehow. According to McVicker, Valve is courting Microsoft in an attempt to unite the two platforms, although it's unclear if these talks have - or ever will - come to anything.
Certainly, Newell's latest comments suggest that something is in the works. We also know that Microsoft is keen to work with everyone these days, from being a driving force behind cross-platform play to announcing Xbox Game Pass for mobile devices, getting Xbox on as many platforms as possible is clearly at the forefront of Microsoft's current strategy. A Steam partnership wouldn't be hugely surprising.
Even if it's something as simple as another Orange Box-style compilation of Valve games on console, I'd be pretty happy to be honest. Hell, I'd settle for Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal 2 on Nintendo Switch. It still blows my mind we haven't seen these classics on Nintendo's home console/handheld hybrid.
