Long-suffering fans of the Splinter Cell series will be delighted to learn that Ubisoft has greenlit the first brand-new entry in the stealth-action series since 2013's Splinter Cell Blacklist.

That's according to multiple sources close to the project's development, who have told VGC the game has entered production as a way of winning back over fans frustrated with the steady stream of mobile and VR spinoffs.

It's currently unclear which of Ubisoft's studios are working on the project, although it's been suggested that development will be led by a team outside of the series' typical Montreal group. The title is reportedly in very early stages of production, but could possibly be announced as early as next year.

This is undoubtedly exciting news for fans who have spent most of the last decade watching Splinter Cell protagonist Sam Fisher wheeled out for other games and spinoffs while failing to appear in his own new instalment.

It's unclear exactly when this new entry might finally materialise, but right now Splinter Cell fans have something they haven't had for quite some time: they have a reason to hope. That's definitely better than nothing.
