‘Mortal Kombat’ Movie Theory Speculates That This Character Is Scorpion's Son

When Hell freezes over.

This wild Mortal Kombat theory connects these two characters together, and it means that the movie, the comics and the games could link in a major way.

There's not long left to wait for the Mortal Kombat movie, and we are so, so, so amped for the adaptation. A star-studded cast will bring the characters to life for the third time, with Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Josh Lawson as Kano, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. In an interview, director Simon McQuoid explained that the movie will not be holding back. "We needed it to be really elemental and really brutal. It's not a shiny film... I wanted the dirt and the grime to come through," he said.

"There are some crazy fatalities," added Lewis Tan, who plays Cole Young, a brand new character in the Mortal Kombat universe. "We've picked a couple of iconic ones. There's a lot of really cool signature moves that you'll see, a lot of Easter eggs that we snuck into the film, but there are some really badass fatalities that I can't wait to see on the big screen." Cole is a down-on-his-luck MMA fighter who becomes embroiled in the tournament to decide the destiny of this realm, but it appears that his fate was written for him. He has a birthmark that mimics the shape of the Mortal Kombat emblem, showing that forces unknown were in fact ferrying him to the mystical competition.

Crafty fans have also noticed that Cole dons yellow wraps around his hands and wrists when he fights, and a moment in the trailer sees Cole spying Scorpion when he looks in the mirror. According to this theory, these crumbs could be leading a trail to confirm that Cole is Scorpion's son, who had somehow survived the attack carried out by Sub-Zero.

The beginning of the movie will depict that tragedy, though it does occur in medieval Japan, whereas Cole is very much from the 21st century. However, it's possible that Cole was spirited away from the home while his parents were killed, brought into the future where he would be perceived to be safe, and sustained amnesia due to the stress of this ordeal. Bit of a leap, I'll admit. But, the concrete evidence that points towards this theory is that Sub-Zero is hunting Cole, and through his brand, Shang Tsung has selected Cole to be killed in the competition. This would end the Shirai Ryu clan for good.

There are a number of fan theories about Cole floating about on the internet, and to be honest, I vibe with this one. If Cole and Scorpion are related and the former takes up the latter's mantle, then that's definitely forming the foundation for a franchise. When we learn more, you'll be the first to know.
