A dataminer has discovered a number of audio files in Mortal Kombat 11 which sound like they were recorded by actors from the 1995 movie adaptation.

How very odd. The audio files are for Raiden, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage, who were portrayed by Christopher Lambert, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, and Linden Ashby in the movie. Now, that movie was a spectacle. A hodgepodge of CGI and practical effects, somersaults over somersaults over somersaults, fatalities filtered down by health and safety forms, and all propped up with a subpar script. Still, the earnestness with which it applied the outlandish lore of the Mortal Kombat games awarded it a special place in the series of video game movies. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Anyway, isn't it very bizarre to have these actors appear again in Mortal Kombat 11? With no fanfare, no announcement, no nothing? Although other uploads of the voices have been whisked away by parties claiming to represent Warner Bros., they're also found here on Reddit if you want to listen for yourself. It's sent fans into a frenzy of speculation, because new voices are often only added for a special skin.

However, actors from the 1995 adaptation have been in talks with WB Games in the past. When Shang Tsung arrived in Mortal Kombat 11, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa lent his voice to the character, as well as completing motion-capture for the shapeshifter. He also played the character in the movie, so, perhaps these files are a remnant of when WB Games had intentions to bring the movie actors back for a number of special appearances. We can't say for sure, especially owing to the vigour with which Warner Bros. struck these voice lines from the internet. It's an unintentional Easter egg, of sorts.

The new Mortal Kombat movie slated for early 2021, directed by Simon McQuoid, and it will be a clean slate for the movie adaptations as a whole. Sub-Zero will be played by Joe Taslim, with Raiden played by Tadanobu Asano and Liu Kang played by Ludi Lin. Mehcad Brooks, well-known for his roles in Desperate Housewives and Supergirl, will take on the role of Jax Briggs. Josh Lawson and Jessica McNamee will portray Kano and Sonya, respectively, and fun fact: they were both in Home and Away. And, Deadpool 2's Lewis Tan and newcomer Mathilda Kimber are confirmed to have signed onto the project in unannounced roles.
