The CW's upcoming live-action reboot of Powerpuff Girls has found its three leads. The gritty reimaging of the colourful 90's Cartoon Network show has cast Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup, according to a new report from Variety.

This unexpected Powerpuff Girls revival has been in development since August, and is set to take place many years after the events of the original cartoon. The titular girls have now grown into "disillusioned twenty-something-year-olds" with an intense anger and resentment over the fact that their childhood was wasted fighting things like giant monsters, talking monkeys, and one dude that I am pretty sure was supposed to be Satan.

Of course it wouldn't be much of a show of events didn't conspire to reunite the three heroes, and so it is that a new threat will arise to bring Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup back together again. I don't imagine they'll be donning the same outfits as they did in the cartoons, however.

Variety reports that Blossom - once the bossy and self-assured leader of the group - has become an anxious recluse who suffers from repressed superhero trauma. Bubbles is just as optimistic and, well, bubbly as ever, but it sounds like she's now more interested in becoming famous than saving the world. Smells like a character arc to me. Finally, Buttercup - formerly the tough-as-nails rebel of the group - is now trying to a live quiet life under anonymity. Let's see how long that lasts.

Bennet is perhaps best known for playing Daisy "Skye" Johnson on the MCU show Agents Of Shield, where she also briefly worked with Cameron for an episode or two. Cameron has also done a ton of work with Disney on shows like Descendants. Perrault has appeared in a number of musical roles over the years, including the Alanis Morissette musical "Jagged Little Pill."

It'll certainly be interesting to see how Powerpuff Girls comes together. My gut reaction is that trying to mix The Umbrella Academy with a beloved Cartoon Network show is going to be incredibly messy, but if it's done just right? Well, it could end up being a fantastic surprise. Let's wait and see.
