Future PlayStation PC Ports May Require A PSN Account To Play

Some strange phrasing on a FAQ on PlayStation's site seems to imply that PC gamers will require a PSN account in the future.

From the port of God of War (2018) which landed on Steam earlier this year, to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered which is set to swing onto PC tomorrow, PC gamers have been seeing an increasing number of games that were originally PlayStation exclusives making their way onto the platform.

Take a look at the trailer for the PC port of Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered below.

This can really only be considered a good thing for everyone involved - more people get to try some incredible games, and the whole internet gets to bask in the glory of all the fantastic (and hilarious) mods which are churned out for them.

Earlier this year, a PlayStation job listing seemed to indicate that even more PC ports could be headed our way - the role was looking for someone to optimise “PC sales growth”, and identify “future sectors and partnerships for commercial growth” within PC gaming. At the moment, you don’t need a PSN account to enjoy PlayStation’s PC ports, but as reported by VGC, this could be set to change.

On a FAQ section of the PlayStation site, the answer to “do I need a PSN account to play PlayStation games on PC?” is phrased in a rather unusual way: “No, you currently do not need a PSN account to enjoy PlayStation Studios games on PC,” it reads. The use of the word “currently” certainly implies that gamers might need one in the future.

This isn’t too surprising - a different PlayStation job role, spotted back in May, suggested that PSN platform integration is coming to PC, so it’s looking like this won’t be an optional feature, but rather, a requirement. We’ll just have to watch this space.
