Pokémon Wind And Waves isn’t due out for another year so while you wait why not play one of many unofficial sequels, Pokémon Monomyth?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A was an excellent showing from Game Freak but we’re still missing the good old days of when the Pokémon series was 2D.
We were all hyped beyond belief when Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were ported to the Nintendo Switch and hopefully, there’s more to come.
For those who want more, your best bet is the unofficial Pokémon games, otherwise known as ROM hacks.
One of the best ROM hacks we’ve seen so far was only unveiled just a few days ago called Pokémon Monomyth.

Created by Team Monomyth, it harkens back to the peak of the Pokémon series, when its games were benignly produced for the Nintendo Game Boy.
Pokémon Monomyth is a ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald and tells an original story set within a new region, Athanto.
The full game will boast over 75 hours of playtime with a roster of 360+ Pokémon. This includes returning Pokémon from other games in addition to brand-new ones never seen before.
Aside from the main story, there’ll also be plenty of side content to play like Contest Halls, the Battle Frontier and Trainer Hill.
Asynchronous multiplayer is also supported allowing you to trade Pokémon with friends using the Link Cable feature. There’s more reason to do this too as in this game Pokémon can sport different ‘coats’ resulting in new and unique designs.
Team Monomyth has apparently spent over six years developing this ROM hack and you can really tell. Were it not for the wilder premise of the game’s story, you’d have a hard time distinguishing it from an official Game Freak title.
A download for Pokémon Monomyth isn’t available just yet but the developers have promised a release of Fall 2026.
When it’s finished, you’ll be able to find the ROM hack on the official Pokémon Monomyth website along with some more information about the game.
Prior to downloading though you’ll need a ROM of Pokémon Emerald which you must acquire from your own purchased physical copy of the game. Downloading a ROM from the internet is piracy which is not encouraged.
Once you have your ROM though and when Pokémon Monomyth is out, all you’ll need to do is download it and apply it to said ROM. There are plenty of guides for this online but don’t worry if you’re not very tech-savvy, it’s very easy.
Pokémon Monomyth is just one of many excellent ROM hacks you can find online and if you’re looking for another recommendation, let us suggest Super Mariomon. As the name suggests it turns the Mushroom Kingdom into an open-world Pokémon game, it’s fantastic.
