It’s been one massive game release after the other so far this year, hasn't it? Before the internet was completely consumed by Elden Ring, we had a pleasant week of gushing over Horizon Forbidden West. And before that, we had Techland’s latest zombie survival, Dying Light 2, which in our review, we described as “an expansive - if not entirely original - open-world playground that’s filled with epic action, pleasingly brutal combat, and some difficult choices.”

The sequel also very quickly proved to be way more popular than its predecessor - on release day, the number of people sinking their teeth into it (sorry, not sorry) went way past what the original game ever had. It managed to reach a peak concurrent player count of 164K - almost four times more than Dying Light managed in its lifetime (its all time peak was 46K). Basically, a lot of people who’ve played Dying Light 2 haven’t played the first one, and now, it seems like you all have the perfect excuse to finally do so, because it’s just got a free new-gen upgrade.

Before we go on, did you know that you can get a flying broomstick in Dying Light 2? You're not really meant to be able to keep it, but there's a way - check out how to do it below.

Techland announced the news over on Twitter yesterday, revealing the changes that have been rolled out for both PS5 and PS4 Pro users: “Console players! A next-gen patch has come to PlayStation, bringing quality improvements and enhancing your gameplay experience even more,” they wrote. “Try out the new video modes and enjoy the increased view distance while parkouring through Harran! Coming to Xbox soon! Stay tuned!”

So, what does the upgrade include? PS5 users now have access to ‘performance mode’ (60 FPS and full HD visuals), ‘balanced mode’ (which aims for 60 FPS, in QHD), and finally ‘quality mode’ (30 FPS in 4K resolution). As for the PS4 Pro, the changes aren’t quite so significant, but the 30 FPS cap has apparently been improved, and there’s also new networking, which makes use of the “EOS solution”, which is presumably something to do with Epic Online Services (generally used for cross-platform functionality in games).

This update is out right now for PlayStation users, but there’s no current timeframe for when Xbox users can expect to see it. The devs added in a follow-up tweet that there’s also a new patch on the way for Dying Light 2 soon, so we’ll have to stay tuned for that, too.
