Fallout meets BioShock in popular new Steam game

Can you survive in this water-world

There are already several survival games set in a world of oceans and seas, but as the genre is consistently attracting fans, you can never have too many.

Sunkenland is a survival game that initially feels a lot like Raft as your character is surrounded by water on all sides. However, swim a little deeper and you realise this is a world in which the sea levels rose above the buildings taking much of the population with it.

Fallout Shelter features very similar base building, as does Fallout 76

This is a post-apocalypse that is rarely seen, outside of the disastrous Kevin Costner film. The water contains an old civilisation in its depths, a place to scavenge for materials and items, where danger is always around the corner. When looking for materials, the claustrophobia of the deep and dark waters will continue to press in, but the waters appear to hold some wonderful sights, whether that’s old power plants or broken-down apartment buildings.

Once you’ve got a stack of resources you can build any type of base, anywhere you want. “Will it be a water stronghold, an abandoned ship base, or an island penthouse? You need it to keep yourself refreshed, craft items, farm, store items, and stay protected.”

Sunkenland features the usual survival mechanics as well as a whole host of crafting options to not only keep you alive, but to defend your base too. This isn’t a peaceful survival, there are battles aplenty and the game begins to feel a bit like Rust where you “fight mutants and pirates. Raid enemy atolls and steal their resources. Use melee weapons, firearms, and explosives. Fight on ocean and land.”

As a fan of survival games and some who loved Raft, this new game appeals to me. The idea of constructing a base and defending it from NPCs adds a new layer to the genre. I’ll definitely be checking it out.
