Many of us splash out on a fancy limited-edition from time to time, however, the price on these extra fancy Lord Of The Rings books made our eyes pop out.
The books come as a trilogy and feature all of the niceties you expect from high-end readables. They are leather bound with cloth sides, printed in colour, and pages topped with silver. You even get a little red satin ribbon to keep your page. What makes these particularly special is that they are signed and illustrated by one of the lead concept artists from Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings film trilogy, Alan Lee. The art work is indeed a work of art, and yet we still couldn’t see ourselves justifying the price Folio Society is charging.

Brace yourselves, because this set of three books has cost their buyers a whopping ₤1000 a set. That’s a grand for a trilogy of books I’m pretty sure most of the people buying already own and have possibly even read a few dozen times. That could buy you 4000 Freddos, even with today’s rapid inflation.

What scrambled our brains almost as much as the cost, was that the collection sold out in just over a day. The release was limited to just a thousand copies, however, that is still a minimum of a thousand people who are willing to part with a thousand British pounds in exchange for some of the most widely distributed books in the world.
This edition isn’t just books however. It comes with a print of a map drawn by J. R. R. Tolkein’s late son Christoper Tolkein, and a nice print and slip case. Still, if you have the money to collect books like these then you must have one enviable library.
