The Elder Scrolls VI was announced nearly a decade ago and there’s still no update on it. Fortunately, this new rival is taking our mind off it.

Bethesda has produced some of the greatest RPGs we’ve ever played from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to Fallout 4.

We’re all expecting The Elder Scrolls VI to be another masterpiece but we can’t forget the games that have taken inspiration from Bethesda’s work and, sometimes, surpassed it.

This Elder Scrolls 6 Rival Takes Inspiration From The Early Games In The Series

Some of the latest open-world games like Crimson Desert have shown us just how far technology has come since the earlier days of gaming.

However, one Bethesda title still dwarfs many modern open-world games, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.

To be fair, Daggerfall cheats a bit as it’s not a true open-world. A game can be as big as it likes when all it needs to load is 2D sprites.

Broken Dagger, developed by Electro Soul Games, draws a lot of its inspiration from Daggerfall to create a remarkable RPG unlike anything we’ve seen this year.

While it’s not currently out in the wild, you can find the game listed on Steam and we’d encourage you to take a look for yourself, especially if you’re nostalgic for old-school RPGs.

It combines 2D sprites with 3D models and like the Elder Scrolls series, it encourages complete player freedom.

The game’s description reads: “Broken Dagger is a dark fantasy RPG where your decisions truly matter. Solve quests in multiple ways, explore a living world, and forge your own path. Heavily inspired by Daggerfall, it delivers a classic RPG experience with modern design.”

You can tell it’s inspired by Daggerfall by the way the horse riding looks - it’s adorable.

There’s something innately charming about this style of game and just seeing the player’s character hack-and-slash their way through goblins and orcs makes us excited to play it ourselves.

Unfortunately, no release date has been attributed to the game at the time of writing but it’ll be entering early access soon.

We don’t actually think Broken Dagger can go toe-to-toe with the next official Elder Scrolls game but we’d still love to see it try. With so much bloat in the games industry, titles like Broken Dagger feel like a breath of fresh air and we’d love to see more classic game-inspired titles surface in the coming years.

That said, we'd also like to see The Elder Scrolls VI surface in the coming years too…

Hopefully Bethesda has something planned for the remainder of 2026 but we’re not holding our breath.
