The legendary Dead Space is free to download right now, but there’s a catch as it might not be quite what you’d expect.

The Dead Space remake was released earlier this year for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Much like the recent Resident Evil 4 remake, Dead Space in 2023 was a perfect example of recreating a beloved horror classic from the ground up with modernised improvements, but yet retaining its magic of what first brought it to the dance.

Despite igniting the Woke Brigade that review-bombed the Dead Space remake for the silliest of reasons, it was considered to be such a success for EA, that remakes of its two sequels are already seemingly on the cards.

However, before those remakes arrive, how about something a little different to keep us occupied? As reported by Push Square, talented indie developer Fraser Brumley has created a demake of Dead Space inspired by the classic PS1 era of yesteryear.

“You’ve played Dead Space (2008) and you’ve played Dead Space (2023), it’s time to soak in the horrid vibes of Dead Space (1998), " reads the game's description.

“I've been working on this for a lot longer than I planned and the end product is probably shorter than you expect but I hope you have fun playing it,” said Brumley. “This project was mostly a way for me to learn Unreal and the PS1 aesthetic so I look forward to what I'll be putting together in the future.”

The demake is said to last around 10 to 15 minutes, but as the developer said, this project was created to learn the mechanics of the Unreal creation suite and to fine-tune that PS1 aesthetic.

The Dead Space demake is available to download now via itch.io and best of all, it’s completely free. So, what are you waiting for? Download it now!

In our review of the Dead Space remake, we described it as being a “nerve-shatteringly terrifying horror”.
