‘Days Gone’ Director Wanted To Make Uncharted Game Starring Young Sully

The director said he wanted to make a "very stylised" game set in the 70s, starring a young Sully figuring out his way in the world.

If you had it in your power to make any game you wanted a reality, what would you want to happen? It’d be easy to think that being a game director would let you bring basically any idea you wanted into the world, but of course, things aren’t so simple, and even they have dreams they can’t necessarily bring to fruition.

Apparently, that includes Days Gone director, Jeff Ross. Speaking on the Sacred Symbols+ show (and transcribed by VGC), he explained how he and his team started theorising about all sorts of games they’d love to see happen, after finding out that Sony had decided not to go ahead with a sequel to their post-apocalyptic 2019 release.

While you're here, be sure to check out our interview with the Uncharted movie cast below.

As I assume you’ve probably already figured out from the headline, that included the Uncharted series, and it sounds like Ross had a whole plan in place for a potential prequel: “Victor Sullivan at the age of 25 in a very stylised world where […] it would be around 1976 [I] think is where we figured out his age might be,” he said. “He busted out of the Navy for reasons, and I thought seeing him young and trying to figure out his way in this world going from trying to be a soldier, or you know, a military man, to now I’m just out on the streets and I’m gonna become a hustler”.

He added that he was influenced by movies like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Joker, specifically regarding their portrayal of the 70s (only without “the cheesy parts”), and that he imagined that “a young sexy Victor Sullivan, to me, would have been like Sean Connery”.

Speaking of Uncharted, there is, of course, the Uncharted movie heading to cinemas very soon - this Friday, to be exact (if you live in the UK, that is - American audiences will have to wait until 18 February). In case you’re out of the loop, it stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, and Mark Wahlberg as Sully, out on a mission to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan 500 years ago. Is it going to be any good? We’ll just have to wait and see, and we won't be waiting long.
