Cyberpunk 2077 Spiritual Successor Lands in AAA Open-World RPG No Law

Does it look like Cyberpunk 2077, or does it just look like the cyberpunk genre?

This upcoming open-world RPG looks like a blast, but it also looks a lot like that other popular cyberpunk game. If only I could remember what it was called…

Oh, right, Cyberpunk 2077. I think it's fair to say that, although the genre never truly disappeared altogether, the release of CD Projekt RED’s 2020 RPG Cyberpunk 2077 reinvigorated the cyberpunk genre and aesthetic.

The game was also a huge financial success, which is probably why there are few upcoming games that are trying to cash in on all the hype that CD Projekt RED has built.

Speaking of, earlier this week we got our first look at No Law, an upcoming action RPG from developers Neon Giant and publisher Krafton Inc.

The trailer went down well with folks online, and, based on all the Reddit threads I keep getting recommended, is proving to be one of the standout announcements.

It does look awfully familiar, though. It’s almost as if they were inspired by the popularity of Cyberpunk 2077 or something.

Is that Stellan Skarsgård from Dune on the right?

Seems we’re not the only ones who noticed the similarities though, as users in a thread titled “No Law reveal at TGA really reminds me of cyberpunk” over on the r/cyberpunkgame subreddit already seem excited to get their hands on the game.

“It's gonna be a minute before Cyberpunk 2 gets here so I'm happy to have something similar to bridge the gap, hopefully it plays well”, commented user Hippy-Joe.

“At some points it looked kinda derivative but overall I’m interested to see more and excited that something new may scratch that cyberpunk itch”, replied user aceclown422.

“The inspiration is noticeable, especially in the gameplay. We won't mention the style because that's just how the genre is”, commented user The_Cyberpsycho.

Alright, to clarify before anyone gets mad, I’m in no way implying that this game is actually ripping off Cyberpunk 2077.

Yes, it’s a first-person RPG set in a cyberpunk world, featuring a narrator who sounds an awful lot like Gavin Drea (the voice actor for Male V), but I think the devs were (at most) just inspired by the aesthetic.

Also, Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t even invent the cyberpunk aesthetic. The game is based on the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk, which took influence from William Gibson’s book Neuromancer.

Either way, I think No Law looks neat, and I’m excited to try it out when it comes to PlayStation, Xbox and Steam when it's done.

Jeez, I just realised that if you took a shot every time I said the word “cyberpunk” in this article, you’d probably die from alcohol poisoning.
