Cyberpunk 2077 collides with Tomb Raider in stunning new Unreal Engine 5 game

A new action-adventure

The opening couple of minutes of the trailer for The Grass of Genesis is very much inspired by Tomb Raider, the more recent gritty reboot, anyway. We see a young woman covered in blood and grime loading a pistol. She emerges from a cave into a larger underground area and is immediately set upon by a large group of enemies.

The Tomb Raider inspirations are clear, but there’s a futuristic edge to it, with weapons similar to Cyberpunk 2077. There’s some preposterous silliness to the footage; our hero gets shot over ten times and doesn’t fall, though she’s probably going to need a tetanus shot. Everything seems to kick off and she slays wave after wave of gunners using some slick John Wick movements.

The gritty feel of Tomb Raider is alive and well in The Grass of Genesis

11 minutes into the trailer and it’s pretty clear what The Grass of Genesis is trying to accomplish. It’s a bonkers, but gorgeous, action game that throws out the rulebook. At this point, an enemy appears as a human and mech combo, or full robot, that soaks up bullets and starts launching explosives two feet away from the hero. How she’s still alive is honestly anyone’s guess.

But, the action is great. It’s ludicrous, but fun. Who doesn’t like explosions and intense gunfights? At one point she falls into a seemingly never-ending pit and is rescued by a guy falling through the air who catches her last minute and shoots a grapple line with his hand as the anchor point. Honestly, it’s so over the top, I kind of love it.

It seems to be shaping up into a great little game, although the trailer seems to show most of its chaos in a prerendered engine. The game is slated to release in 2024, though it’s not up for preorder as yet. Hopefully, we’ll get some more news from the Hong Kong-based developers as time goes on, for now, you have a gloriously gratuitous trailer to enjoy.
