Cillian Murphy is ready for the Peaky Blinders movie

Peaky Blinders ended in 2022, but Cillian Murphy says he’d be interested in continuing the Shelby family's story in a film.

The sixth and final season of Peaky Blinders aired in April 2022, capping off the story of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his family of Birmingham gangsters. It was a sad time for everyone, but there is hope of a revival, as series creator Steven Knight has said that the story will likely continue on the big screen, which Cillian Murphy is on board with.

Speaking in an interview with Rolling Stone UK, Murphy was asked Steven Knight’s idea for a Peaky Blinders film and said he’d be up for donning the flat cap and Shelby swagger once again, provided the story was right.

Murphy said: “If there’s more story there, I’d love to do it … but it has to be right.

“Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television, and we left on such a high. I’m really proud of that last series. So, it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more.”

The future seems bright on a Peaky Blinders return, if the series creator and the star of the show are on board, it seems likely that we’ll see it in cinemas eventually. Hopefully, a big-screen blockbuster can live up to the hype and legacy of one of the most popular TV shows in recent memory.

It wouldn’t be the first time a popular television programme has progressed onto the big screen either. The BBC followed a similar pattern with its mature crime-drama, Luther, which received a final season in January 2019. The final episode left on a cliffhanger, with the future of the show up in the air, before it got a continuation through Netflix, Luther: Fallen Sun. It performed quite well, and Idris Elba hopes the character can become its own major franchise, much like James Bond.
