Bloodborne and Nintendo have collided in the absolute coolest way feasible this week– and no, before you ask, I’m not referring to The Duskbloods.
Alright, well, that’s not entirely true, because The Duskbloods does seem to at least be partially to blame for what is potentially the best idea anyone in the history of mankind has ever had.
Little refresher course to get you up to speed; earlier this year, during April’s Nintendo Direct presentation, FromSoftware and Nintendo teamed up to show off an upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive Soulslike titled The Duskbloods.
Reactions have been mixed (to say the least). Some fans say they’ll be there on launch day with their wallets open, others say they’re not going to shell out a bunch of money to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 for a single game, and everyone else is confused as to why FromSoftware is even bothering to develop a legally distinct Bloodborne sequel.

However, the out of left field collaboration between Nintendo and FromSoftware has got some folks thinking… is this newly formed partnership going to continue beyond the release of The Duskbloods?
Probably not. FromSoftware seems pretty keen to continue operating as a free agent, and, even though both Demon’s Souls and Bloodborne were PlayStation exclusives, they don’t seem too bothered about working with Sony again anytime soon.
That’s not stopped the r/bloodborne community from cooking up an extremely unlikely (but really, really cool) timeline in which Bloodborne’s The Hunter pops up in a new Super Smash Bros. game.
No, I’m serious– they’ve even started cooking up their movelist in the comments.

“Actually I think this would be cool”, commented user Inferno_Zyrack.
“You could do a unique “reverse meter” where the specials of the hunter are low damage attacks that build up Frenzy and then the opponent explodes with damage if it maxes out.”
“I haven't played Smash since they introduced Sephiroth, this would get me interested in playing again”, replied user PilotIntelligent8906.
“A tonsil stone item that you can throw which summons a giant amygdala to land on the arena and do laser eyes all over the place. Visceral attacks, moonlight greatsword beam, or a call from beyond as a final smash ability”, commented user plebmasterflex.
“The backyard where you fight gehrman as one of the playable arenas and moon presence is one of the environmental hazards… They could totally integrate BB into smash and it would be dope.”
So, how likely is this to ever actually happen?
On one hand, Sony owns the rights to Bloodborne, so I’m not sure that they’d be willing to let Nintendo use the IP themselves.
Also, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai hasn’t made any kind of announcement regarding a new entry in the series, and the game in the franchise, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, supposedly took somewhere between three to four years to develop… which would probably mean we’re not seeing a new game until some time in 2030 (at the earliest).
On the other hand, weirder guest characters have managed to make their way Smash Bros. games several times before. I’m just saying, if they did announce a new game, there’s not a zero per cent chance that a FromSoftware character wouldn’t make it in.
Although, let’s be real: there’s a much higher chance The Hunter would land in Fortnite before Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 2.
