Flagrant Battlefield Ripoff Has More Players Than 'Battlefield 2042'

Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for Battlefield 2042, its concurrent player numbers were surpassed by a low-poly indie.

You know, I’m not sure we’ve ever seen a game die off faster than Battlefield 2042. I mean, it’s been out barely over two months now, and player numbers have already dwindled so much, even cheat developers are packing their bags and moving on because there’s just not enough people actively playing it. The older games in the series have also seen players flooding back to them, and really, I don’t think anyone can blame them.

Now, according to data from Steam Charts, a low-poly indie game, which has clearly been heavily inspired by Battlefield to say the least, recently surpassed Battlefield 2042’s number of concurrent players on Steam. Which probably says all you need to know about the state of what was supposed to be one of 2021’s most-hyped releases.

While you're here, be sure to check out some of the funniest Battlefield 2042 wins and fails below.

This was first spotted by known industry insider and leaker Tom Henderson on Twitter, who tweeted out earlier this week: “If you've not played Battle Bit Remastered yet, give it a go - The Battlefield community seems to be loving it. It just passed more concurrent players than Battlefield 2042.”

In case you weren’t familiar, BattleBit Remastered is an early access game, which you can download for free on Steam. It describes itself as “a low-poly FPS that aims for a massively multiplayer experience”. The character models honestly look a bit like Roblox avatars, which, while I think we can all agree isn’t the best look, at least it’s intentional - unlike 2042’s horrifying visual glitches.

Of course, the Steam figures only account for part of Battlefield 2042’s player base, due to all the console users out there too, but it’s still very indicative of the state of the game if a small indie could easily exceed its concurrent player numbers. It’s even been claimed that 2042 could be going free-to-play in some capacity to combat its disastrous reception, which would surely help player numbers, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
