Batgirl’s sudden cancellation came as a shock to everyone. The HBO Max project was announced just last year, with In The Heights star Leslie Grace set to take on the role of Barbara Gordon. Delighting DC fans, Michael Keaton was also set to reprise his role as Batman after last appearing in 1992’s Batman Returns.

Filming had already wrapped on the project which made this week’s axing of the film all the more confusing. HBO Max blamed the cancellation on a “strategic shift” in leadership, but now leading actress Grace has ended her silence.

Speaking of DC, check out the trailer for Black Adam ahead of the film’s premiere later this year.

Leslie Grace took to Instagram to reflect on the news, keeping her comments surprisingly upbeat. The actress wrote, “Querida familia! On the heels of the recent news about our movie Batgirl, I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over seven months in Scotland. I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process! To every Batgirl fan – THANK YOU for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, ‘My own damn hero!’ Batgirl for life.”

Alongside the caption, Grace posted a series of behind the scenes photos showing her donning Batgirl’s very cool costume. Echoing the actress’ praise of the film’s cast and crew, a Warner Bros Pictures spokesperson previously said, “Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance.”

Batgirl’s directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah also issued a statement saying, “We still can’t believe it. As directors, it is critical that our work be shown to audiences, and while the film was far from finished, we wish that fans all over the world would have had the opportunity to see and embrace the final film themselves.” It certainly is sad news, although we know how powerful DC fans can be. Maybe one day Batgirl will see the light of day.
