Baldur’s Gate 3 earned the title of Game Of The Year for a reason, and while we shouldn’t expect Baldur’s Gate 4 anytime soon there are plenty of games out there attempting to follow in its footsteps.
Some of these Baldur’s Gate-like games either go big or go home, hoping to capture some of that lightning in a bottle that Larian flaunted so stylishly.
However other titles take a more laid-back approach, really digging deep into that Dungeons & Dragons inspiration that the Baldur’s Gate series owes its success to. Choosing your own adventure is fun, and we need more games that understand that design philosophy.
So on that note let me introduce The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles, an insane name for an insane game.

Like Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur’s Gate 3, The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles is all about a rapidly changing adventure.
When no new play throughs are the same you know you’ve done a good job.
Its Steam description reads as follows: “The Hyper‑Dungeon awaits! Explore an evershifting labyrinth where classic dungeon‑crawling meets exhilarating action.
"Challenge yourself in turn-based combat with a real‑time, arcade‑inspired twist and befriend an eccentric cast of dungeon dwellers on the quest for the legendary Sacred Groowl!”

So it’s like one massive, constantly shifting Baldur’s Gate 3 dungeon, complete with traps and challenges that’ll test even the most skilled RPG players.
Stylistically this game doesn’t attempt complex, next-generational graphics but a cosier artstyle akin to that of Stardew Valley.
Pixel art, bright colours and clear items designs for easy accessibility and strategic play. Players should get up to speed on its gameplay pretty quickly.

Like any solid RPG the cherry on top is rich lore, and while it probably won’t fill many textbooks there is depth to this world for those who like to stop and read.
The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles launched on Steam fairly recently and so far it’s had decent reviews. It’s currently sitting at a Mostly Positive rating with 77 reviews at the time of writing,
If you’re keen to try it out for yourself there is a free demo available right now, though the full game isn’t too pricey. At the moment it’s on sale for a tenner.
I don’t think any game is going to come close to the perfection of Baldur’s Gate 3 for quite a while, but that doesn’t mean games like The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles don’t have value.
