'Avatar' Remastered Is Coming To Cinemas Later This Year, For Some Reason

We’ve been waiting for more Avatar news since audiences were captivated by the film when it released in 2009. Over a decade since then, other films such as Spider-Man: No Way Home have taken Avatar’s box office crown.

Still, people were excited to hear more at CinemaCon 2022. And as reported by IGN, the sequel finally has a name, Avatar: The Way Of Water. Director James Cameron appeared in a pre-recorded message saying that the first of four standalone but interconnected Avatar sequels will release on 16 December 2022. Before this, the trailer will be played exclusively in cinemas before showings of Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. This will be the first time footage from the sequel is shown since images were released last year.

You can see our interview with actor Tom Holland about the success of the latest Spider-Man film in the video below.

While this was certainly a surprise to attendees to the conference, what was more surprising was the announcement that the original Avatar film will see another theatrical release prior to the release of the first sequel. The intended date for the re-release is set for 23 September 2022.

The re-release is reportedly a remaster, and will include updated images and sound. Cameron previously claimed there would be a remastering of Avatar in 2017, when he was promoting the remastered version of the Titanic with Dolby. However, as five years had passed with no news on the remaster, people had mostly long forgotten. But here we are, and here it is.

The second sequel to Avatar - so, the movie we get after The Way of Water - is reportedly 90% complete at the moment and will release on 22 December 2023. Dates have in fact been marked off for all four sequels, even though the third and fourth are far from completion. They are set for December releases, too, in 2025 and 2027 respectively.
