Assassin’s Creed fans are surprised by a free new release that’s available to download right now.
Ever since we were first introduced to Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad in 2007’s Assassin’s Creed, it instantly became one of Ubisoft’s most popular properties and has spawned many sequels, as well as spin-offs.
As an obsessed Assassin’s Creed fan with more collectables than I’d ever need, and a tattoo, I’d be hard-pressed to pick out a single favourite game in the series.
However, I’m pretty sure that Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed Origins would be somewhere at the top of my list.

Speaking of 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, following the game's launch, arguably my favourite mode in the series was released via a free update called the ‘Discovery Tour: Ancient Egypt’.
‘The Discovery Tour’ is an interactive educational mode using the in-game engine that lets you explore a hub in the game's world with various points of interest and information curated by qualified historians.
‘The Discovery Tour’ would later return in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey (ancient Greece) and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (Anglo-Saxon England).
Sadly, 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla would be the last we’d see of this mode, that was until now, because Ubisoft has just released the Discovery Tour App – Medieval Baghdad.

Inspired by 2023’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage, rather than being an in-game mode, the Discovery Tour App – Medieval Baghdad is a free mobile download for Android and iOS.
While it seems like a strange move to not release this as DLC for a main game, by releasing it as a free mobile app, it doesn't matter whether you own an Assassin’s Creed game; heck, you don't even need to be a fan, because this educational tool is more accessible than ever.
Discovery Tour App – Medieval Baghdad has two modes: ‘Access Codex’, which allows you to read about historic moments, culture, and admire pieces of art.
The second mode, ‘Explore Baghdad’, allows you to play story missions and enjoy mini games while learning. This mode doesn't have you controlling a character to explore; it’s more like Google Street View if anything, but it’s fun nonetheless.
