Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series has had some hits and misses over its almost twenty-year lifespan but most fans would agree that its sixth major instalment, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, was one such hit.

First released in 2013, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag took fans to 1715 during the Golden Age of Piracy and saw them take on the role of cheeky assassin, Edward Kenway. Despite the title recently celebrating its ten-year anniversary, fans are still praising its gameplay and story and are often petitioning for Ubisoft to get to work on a remake.

Although Ubisoft are yet to confirm or deny a remake, it has not stopped fans from taking matters into their own hands which seems to be the case for Youtuber KTMX.

The account which is dedicated to pushing game’s graphics to their limits whether by mods or setting adjustments decided to get to work on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag back in 2021.

“This is the ultimate remastered graphics, Reshade, global illumination, ray tracing, enabled graphics mod for AC Black Flag using reshade RTGI by Pascal Glicher and other effects,” they wrote in the video description. They go on to share that getting to such an incredible result took around ten hours but the end product would result in “better water, more draw distance LOD, advanced ambient occultations and aesthetic photorealistic/photoreal lighting and more”.

It is clear that KTMX’s adjustments are worth it as we see an eight-minute glimpse at Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag in 4K. The creator shows us the improvements in the crystal waters of the Caribbean, the dimly lit explorable caverns and even the bustling towns that Edward often finds himself in. Despite the game originally being released in 2013 and being a beautiful game in its own right, seeing it in 4K shows how far we have come in terms of video game graphics.

Whether or not Ubisoft will get inspired by these fan-made projects remains to be seen. Here’s hoping though!
