Anthem officially being put out of its misery, will be unplayable forever

You still have time to play before it's gone forever

Regardless of how the game is perceived, it is always still a shame to see a title finally come to the end but unfortunately, that is the case for one 2019 action RPG.

It has been reported that BioWare’s Anthem is finally being put out of its misery and will be made unplayable from the start of 2026 onwards.

First released in 2019, Anthem is an online multiplayer action RPG set on the planet of Coda. Players will become Freelancers, heroic soldiers who were exosuits in order to defend humanity against any and all threats.

Despite an interesting sounding concept, Anthem was considered a failure due to rushed development (just 15 months according to a former developer), a lack of cohesive gameplay, an empty world, multiple glitches and much more.

As a result, it is perhaps no surprise that BioWare has revealed that Anthem will be sunsetting on 12 January 2026.

“We have an important update to share regarding Anthem”, the blog post read.

“After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026.

This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days. As of today, you can no longer purchase in-game premium currency, but you can still use your remaining balance until the servers go offline.

We deeply appreciate your dedication, passion and support over the years and we’d like to thank you

for that.”

Put simply, Anthem will no longer be playable after 12 January and as the game is purely online, this counts for any offline play too.

News of the removal took to r/PS5 where users came together to share their thoughts on the end of Anthem.

“Could have been a great Iron Man Simulator if they just designed it with an engaging endgame,” user shadowglint wrote.

WolfofDunwall said, “Utterly not shocking. It was only a matter of time after they scrapped the 2.0 update.

However it’s honestly kind of bulls*it that huge gaming companies can simply nullify a purchase by making it straight up unplayable.

They should be mandated to provide one final offline mode update for people who own it and still want to play it.”

If you still want to play Anthem, you have just a few months to do so and then the BioWare RPG will be gone forever.
