Can you believe that American Pie was released 24 years ago? That’s one way to make you feel old on a Monday morning.

The film is known for its outlandish and raucous humour, some of which feels far more inappropriate these days. In fact, many teens recently deemed the film “deeply problematic” after watching it for the first time. If you don’t know, American Pie centres around a group of high schoolers who make a pact to lose their virginity before graduation. The film was an immense success, spawning three sequels: American Pie 2, American Wedding, and American Reunion. Now, Stifler actor Seann William Scott has reflected on the series’ success, adding to the sentiment that these films could never be made today.

Take a look at American Pie in action below.

As reported by our friends at UNILAD, in an interview with Jake’s Takes, Scott explained why he thinks American Pie was a product of its time. “You know, I was having a conversation with a friend the other day, I was like, 'You could never make American Pie these days.' Some of the stuff in that movie, you would get arrested and probably go to jail for a long time if you did it,” he explained.

He added that he didn’t “ever see there being an appetite” for “those sorts of movies again”. He added that he could be wrong but on the whole, people are “appreciating more of a witty, smart humour and good writing as opposed to just something kind of over-the-top”.

The actor may not be totally correct. As of May 2023, there is talk of a possible American Pie 5 with a “great” story idea floating around - according to MovieWeb. I’d imagine that such a reboot would be a fresh take on the series, reflecting the sentiment that Scott suggested.
