This glorious remaster of its 1999 source material modernises Age of Empires II with a 4K resolution, enhanced visuals, all previously released expansions and more. However, developers Forgotten Empires have just released a new patch that not only makes many quality-of-life improvements but even adds two new campaigns as free DLC.

As detailed on AgeOfEmpires.com, the update has brought two campaigns from its ‘Return of Rome’ DLC. The two campaigns in question are ‘Ascent of Egypt’ and ‘The First Punic War’.

“Follow the creation of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, learning the skills and strategies you need to guide your civilization to victory across 12 scenarios in the Ascent of Egypt campaign,” reads the description for ‘Ascent of Egypt’. “Each scenario is designed to help nurture your fundamentals and practise a specific skill, such as: Exploring the map, building your economy and even converting enemy units.”

Whereas in ‘The First Punic War’, you will: “Command the mighty Carthaginian empire in their war against the aggressive, Roman Empire. Push back the Roman invasion, destroy their supply lines and erect a monument to the strength of Carthage across three epic scenarios. Then, you’ll have demonstrated the futility of challenging Carthage, and sent the Romans back to where they came from!”

If you thought that was the end of the free content for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, think again! At a later date, Microsoft Game Studios and Forgotten Empires will be treating us to the ‘Glory of Greece’ and ‘The Voices of Babylon’ DLC which will also arrive via an upcoming update.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is available now for PC and Xbox. It is also available at no extra cost for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
