There is no doubt that the Grand Theft Auto series is one of the biggest video game properties of all time. In fact, it’s one of the biggest and most lucrative properties in all of entertainment.

Before the arrival of GTA III in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, the Grand Theft Auto series was a fun, but limited top-down game. However, when Rockstar Games launched GTA III two decades ago, it was a game changer especially when it came to the open-world action genre with its impact still resonating today.

Check out our GTA VI round-up video below!

Over the years, the Grand Theft Auto series has grown into a worldwide phenomenon with the last entry being GTA V which initially launched in 2013 before being ported to multiple platforms across generations.

Not content with all the money that the GTA V single-player campaign could bring, GTA Online is Rockstar Games’ biggest cash cow as its millions of loyal fans splash the dosh on its in-game currency, collectively known as Shark Cards.

It’s fair to say that not only have GTA Online players invested hundreds of gameplay hours, but there’s also been a hefty financial investment too. So can you imagine if you invest incredible hours and money into a game only for it to be taken away? Well, in the modern-day era of live services that is a common practice.

As reported by Metro, millions of GTA Online gamers will be losing their progress with Windows 7 and Windows 8 going offline in 2024. That’s if they don’t transfer their progress to the latest operating system, Windows 11.

While it’s likely that Rockstar Games would have come to this decision itself, as it had done with the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA Online, it’s Microsoft that is ending support for Windows 7 and 8 as of 30 January 2024.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the current version of GTA Online once the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI is finally released on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Whenever that may be.
