What can only be one of the best indies to release this year finally has a release date, and it’s one Legend of Zelda fans won’t want to miss.

The Legend of Zelda series is a little too quiet at the moment as fans wait with bated breath for the Ocarina of Time remake announcement.

Insiders reckon one is coming and it sounds like it’ll be quite controversial, but for those who doubt its existence, Nintendo just announced a remake of Star Fox 64 so the critically-acclaimed N64 Zelda game can’t be far behind.

As Zelda fans lie in wait though, we’d be remiss if we didn’t recommend something to pass the time with, and you won’t get much better than this highly-anticipated Shove Knight successor that’s dropping later this month.

A Zelda-Inspired RPG That Might Just Be Better Than Nintendo’s Best

From the makers of Shovel Knight, Yacht Club Games, comes Mina The Hollower which is quite a departure from the studio’s shovel-wielding, side-scrolling platformer game.

Mina The Hollower is a top-down RPG taking inspiration from the old-school Legend of Zelda games, but with a few soulslike mechanics sprinkled in for good measure.

We’ve been waiting for this game for quite a while as it was originally supposed to launch last year, and there was even a demo available on the Nintendo Switch eShop, Xbox Store, PlayStation Store and Steam.

Unfortunately, it didn’t see an update to its release date and the demos were mysteriously pulled offline, later returning to the PlayStation 5 after its last State of Play showcase.

Now Mina The Hollower is back with a release date set in stone, 29 May. The game will also launch for only $20 on all platforms, making it an affordable treat if the latest AAA prices have been bogging you down.

Yacht Club Games is a master of making modern-day titles look like they could have been released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, or other such retro consoles.

Mina The Hollower is no exception, so while it’ll undoubtedly be a fine game, its visuals and gameplay style will definitely appeal to the Zelda fans out there, especially those looking for a more traditional RPG experience.

If you’re interested you should give the demo a go on the PlayStation Store, as it’ll take you through the first level of the game and introduce you to traversal, combat and Mina herself.

Maybe by the time the game finally comes out, we’ll have confirmation Nintendo is working on that Ocarina of Time remake. The Star Fox 64 Remake announcement came out of nowhere so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the company ditch its Nintendo Directs in favour of more unexpected reveals.
