'Halo Infinite' Is Launching December 8, Book Work Off Now

It's been a rough ride for the game but the end is in sight.

They said it couldn't be done. Halo Infinite finally has a launch date for PC and Xbox Series X/S and 343 Industries has put it ahead of the holiday rush this December.

Announced in 2018, it hasn't been smooth sailing for the game in the choppy waters that have plagued its development. It was intended to launch alongside the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S to herald the advent of the new generation of the home console, however the pandemic scuppered those plans. 343 Industries transitioned to working remotely and that caused a knock-on effect to where the teams wanted Halo Infinite to be by the time E3 2020 rolled round. There was even a thought to split the game into parts that would launch sequentially.

Craig, the infamous mug of a Brute that was snapped in the midst of the gameplay reveal for Halo Infinite, then became the poster child for a game that wasn't hitting the spot for fans. "Folks here don't just understand Halo, they love the core gameplay and characters and community-everything that makes Halo, Halo-just as much as I do," explained creative director Joseph Staten when the studio chose to delay the game into 2021. "And, like me, they also feel a deep responsibility to serve. We aren't making this game for us. We're making it for you."

By "you," Staten was of course referring to our two resident Halo boffins, Tom and Dean. After they went hands-on with the multiplayer, they had a lot to say. A lot. Check it out here!

Fortunately, things appear to be on an even keel once again with the reception of the first flight and announcement of the official launch date. It's December 8th so pencil that into your diaries or whatever it is you use to track the terrible passing of time. This date was spotted on the Microsoft Store today by eagle-eyed players and it is expected to be confirmed tonight in gamescom's Opening Night Live celebrations.

Halo Infinite players will sadly go without campaign co-op and Forge from launch, as these will be added in subsequent seasons of the game. In fact, studio head Chris Lee is dead set on using Infinite as the springboard for all Halo experiences for the next 10 years. So, it's best we strap in for the long haul when the game comes to PC and Xbox on December 8th.
