Finally, Xbox hardware gets a long-awaited visual boost thanks to upscaling technology that was promised last year, but there is a catch.
In 2025, Microsoft collaborated with Asus to launch a handheld competitor to the Steam Deck with the ROG Xbox Ally (standard version) and the ROG Xbox Ally X (the more powerful version). By all accounts, this system has proven to be a success, especially for Xbox users being able to access their library of games more easily on the go.
When the handheld Xbox system was launched, Asus and Microsoft promised that the ROG Xbox Ally X would get a massive upscaling improvement, courtesy of AutoSR (Automatic Super Resolution). However, news on that software had been quiet, that was until now.
The long-awaited AutoSR update for the ROG Xbox Ally X is available to download now for those enrolled on Windows Insiders.
As well as upscaling the resolution, it’s also possible to give the framerate a small boost, while making the visuals look a little crisper. At this time, it’s worth mentioning that the AutoSR is only compatible when in docked mode for external display.

What's more, AutoSR should work on all games playable on the ROG Xbox Ally X. Unlike the more common DLSS, which typically needs to be implemented on a game-by-game basis. So, basically, any game that runs DirectX should benefit from the AutoSR update.

To enable AutoSR, its settings can be found in the Game Bar. Here, you can turn the feature on and off. Furthermore, while this update is currently only available to Windows Insider members, it will roll out to everyone at some point soon.
We’ll let you know when the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X update for AutoSR rolls out, hopefully, in the not-too-distant future.
“It boasts the power of a PC, yet is nowhere near as bulky, which comes with the added benefit of allowing me to take it on the go. Add in the fact that you can also enjoy your Xbox library and, well, the Xbox ROG Ally X is just an incredibly handy piece of kit,” said GAMINGbible’s Kate, in her review.
Hopefully, this will be the latest in a long line of system updates that will improve our gaming experience, whether it’s on the Xbox ROG Ally or the superior ROG Xbox Ally X.
