It’s the news we’ve all been waiting for. HBO’s The Last of Us will begin filming its second season next month, and we finally know who will be bringing Abby to life.

It’s surely a highly coveted role in Hollywood, given the immensely positive reception to season one of The Last of Us. Personally, Abby is my favourite character, so I’ve been eagerly anticipating seeing her brought to life. The rumour mill has churned out several names, from Florence Pugh to Katy O’Brien. A short while back though, insiders claimed that Kaitlyn Dever was in talks to take on the role. It was an interesting shout given that Dever previously expressed interest in bringing Ellie to life. Well, we now have confirmation that Dever is in fact taking on the part!

Take a look at our preview of The Last of Us Part II Remastered’s No Return mode below.

Announcing the news, The Last of Us’ Twitter account wrote, “We're thrilled that Kaitlyn Dever is joining HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2 as Abby! We can't wait to see her journey unfold on TV.” I’m honestly stoked about this. If you haven’t seen Dever in action, let me tell you, she is fantastic - and I have no doubt she will capture Abby’s quiet vulnerability hidden behind that hard exterior.

Dever has many credits to her name, starring in: Booksmart, Detroit, Dear Evan Hansen, No One Will Save You, Justified, Last Man Standing, and Dopesick. We already know how great Bella Ramsey is. These two young powerhouses going head to head? Give season two all of the awards now.

The Last of Us will begin filming next month, in February, with the show due to premiere its second season on HBO in 2025. It’s a long wait but hopefully, we’ll get a few set photos to keep us going between now and then.
