Star Wars fans lose it as Yoda mystery solved after 45 years

The Star Wars universe is home to all manner of mysteries, with some even still unsolved to this day.

However, one piece of lore surrounding everybody’s favourite little green Jedi has recently been solved and when you think about it, it does make a lot of sense.

I am of course talking about Yoda, the legendary Jedi Master who soon became the face of the Star Wars series after he was first introduced in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.

Since his first appearance, Yoda has starred in multiple Star Wars movies and television shows, playing an integral role in the Clone Wars and serving as Luke Skywalker’s master.

However, perhaps more famous than his appearance is his dialogue as fans have always wondered why Yoda has such a distinct way of speaking.

Now according to none other than George Lucas himself, we now know why and the reason is quite ingenious.

“Because if you speak regular English, people won’t listen that much,” Lucas explained at the 45th anniversary screening of The Empire Strikes Back.

“But if he had an accent, or it’s really hard to understand what he’s saying, they focus on what he’s saying. He was basically the philosopher of the movie.

I had to figure out a way to get people to actually listen — especially 12-year-olds.”

Well, I would say that the plan definitely works considering that some of Yoda’s most iconic lines are still quoted to this day and it seems as though fellow Star Wars fans agree.

“Makes sense, this does,” said Twitter user Jedi Princess.

Another fan praised Lucas by saying, “Nobody’s mind works the way his does, I love it.”

Additionally, one fan pointed out an interesting detail relating to this fact.

“And that's why Yoda's last words to Luke in The Last Jedi are spoken normally and not backwards:

"Luke... we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters."

Not "Skywalker," but his first name. Because this is Luke's final lesson. He is no longer a student.”
