Marvel's Star Wars comics are finally ready to move on from the original trilogy and bridge the gap between Return of the Jedi and Disney's The Force Awakens.

If you're wondering what that weird clicking sound is, it's the combined keystrokes of hundreds of thousands of angry basement dwellers flocking to Twitter in a simultaneous rage.

As revealed late last month, Marvel's much beloved Star Wars: Darth Vader comic series would be coming to an end. The final issue marks the end of a five year span of comics set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and follows the conclusion of other long-running series such as Star Wars: Doctor Aphra and Star Wars: Bounty Hunters.

The new series, starting with issue #1 of Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku - Insurgency Rising on the 2nd of October this year, will focus on the fall of the Galactic Empire following the events of a crucial defeat on Jakku.

The events that led up to and triggered the events of The Force Awakens have been mostly unexplored up until this point, which writer Alex Segura plans to delve into during the four issue miniseries.

"We'll not only give readers a front-row seat to the final battle of the Galactic Civil War—we'll reframe the aftermath of the Battle of Endor and introduce a new, menacing threat that will keep our heroes guessing," Segura explained. "The goal for all of us is to turn up the volume and make sure this adventure stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the other stories of the era. As the Empire collapses, a new darkness arises!"

Segura is probably best known for their work on Archie comics and their award-winning novel Secret Identity, as well as their work on the Star Wars Poe Dameron: Free Fall novel and the Star Wars: Return Of The Jedi – The Rebellion one-shot comic.

Unfortunately for sequel trilogy haters, it does appear that both Marvel and Disney are doubling down on it's canon status as the true follow-up to the OG trilogy.

I'm sure the internet's collective response to this development will be calm and restrained.
