Star Wars fans are divided after Dave Filoni promoted to chief creative officer

This is the way... or is it? Fans are divided.

You don’t have to be a part of the Star Wars community to know that its fans can be brutal, unnecessarily so. Nor do you have to be one of them to know that when someone else takes the lead of this expansive universe, fans will be divided over the matter, as seen by the reaction to Dave Filoni getting promoted to chief creative officer.

To not know who Filoni is is like saying you don’t know who Luke Skywalker is – it’s just not heard of. Having created popular, beloved series like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, as well as being an executive producer on Rebels and The Book of Boba Fett, this man has become synonymous with SW. As such, it doesn’t seem surprising to hear of his promotion.

Does that mean fans are sold on the idea? Of course not. Amongst the cries of joy from a wide array of fans, there are comments that show concern at this “no-brainer” choice. “Filoni isn’t infallible, I’ve got legitimate gripes with some of his work,” said one fan in response to the news, while another responded, “I like his [Filoni’s] ideas, but people like him need to know when to step aside and let actual experts do their job. Let a good writer write, let a good director direct. Stay big picture.”

Interesting take, especially when other fans are saying that Filoni is the obvious choice and the “most qualified by far” to assume this role. “I know a lot of people dislike this take, but Filoni understands Star Wars on a deep level. This is the perfect place for him,” explained Hefty-Pumpkin-764. “Before a project starts he can sit down with the project runners and have the same conversation Lucas first had with him.”

This is certainly how Filoni is judging the role too, explaining to Vanity Fair, “I’m not telling people what to do. But I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost.” His approach is definitely different from Taika Waititi, who has promised to “piss people off” with his Star Wars film.

The two bring contrasting energies, but we hope the Force is with them both.
