You donāt have to be a part of the Star Wars community to know that its fans can be brutal, unnecessarily so. Nor do you have to be one of them to know that when someone else takes the lead of this expansive universe, fans will be divided over the matter, as seen by the reaction to Dave Filoni getting promoted to chief creative officer.
To not know who Filoni is is like saying you donāt know who Luke Skywalker is ā itās just not heard of. Having created popular, beloved series like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, as well as being an executive producer on Rebels and The Book of Boba Fett, this man has become synonymous with SW. As such, it doesnāt seem surprising to hear of his promotion.

Does that mean fans are sold on the idea? Of course not. Amongst the cries of joy from a wide array of fans, there are comments that show concern at this āno-brainerā choice. āFiloni isnāt infallible, Iāve got legitimate gripes with some of his work,ā said one fan in response to the news, while another responded, āI like his [Filoniās] ideas, but people like him need to know when to step aside and let actual experts do their job. Let a good writer write, let a good director direct. Stay big picture.ā
Interesting take, especially when other fans are saying that Filoni is the obvious choice and the āmost qualified by farā to assume this role. āI know a lot of people dislike this take, but Filoni understands Star Wars on a deep level. This is the perfect place for him,ā explained Hefty-Pumpkin-764. āBefore a project starts he can sit down with the project runners and have the same conversation Lucas first had with him.ā
This is certainly how Filoni is judging the role too, explaining to Vanity Fair, āIām not telling people what to do. But I do feel Iām trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost.ā His approach is definitely different from Taika Waititi, who has promised to āpiss people offā with his Star Wars film.
The two bring contrasting energies, but we hope the Force is with them both.
