Star Wars officially confirms Coruscant's total population, and it's mind-blowing

Size matters not

Star Wars has just officially confirmed Coruscant’s total population, and the real number is hard to fathom.

Out of all the planets featured in Star Wars, fans will know that Coruscant remains one of the biggest and most important places in the galaxy. It’s the seat of government for the Republic and the Galactic Empire, after all.

The fun thing about Coruscant is the entire planet is just one huge city. If you thought getting across London during rush hour was a pain, try being late for your lessons at the Jedi Temple.

Coruscant is the setting for many iconic scenes across the prequel trilogy, as well as plenty of expanded universe material.

Over the years, we’ve had many glimpses of the citywide planet and its inhabitants, but we’ve never really known just how many people actually inhabit the planet.

The 2003 book Coruscant and the Core Worlds gives a population estimate of 2 trillion for the planet. However, it’s worth noting that this book was published by Wizards of the Coast as a sourcebook for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game.

The book may no longer be canon, especially after Disney acquired Lucasfilm. That population number may apply to any books that exist in Legends (Star Wars’ classification for any expanded material made pre-Disney, that is no longer canon), but nothing official.

However, it looks like we now have a new number that estimates the total population of Coruscant, and it’s very high.

The new Star Wars: The Acolyte Visual Guide gives a population census of 2,981,780,000,000 for Coruscant, so nearly a trillion more people than what was confirmed in Coruscant and the Core Worlds.

That’s approximately 370x more the population of Earth, to put it into perspective. And it also only counts those who actually live on Coruscant, and not visitors and guests.

Altogether, it's an impossibly high number to try and comprehend. I probably wouldn't recommend trying to count to that number.

It’s no wonder the streets of Coruscant seemed so crowded during those small glimpses we see in the prequel trilogy.
