Tom Holland says part of him is ready to leave Spider-Man

Is Tom Holland's version of Spider-Man coming to an end in the MCU?

All good things must come to an end, and that sentiment remains true, especially when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Arguably Tom Holland shot to stardom when he was cast to play Spider-Man in the 2016 MCU movie, Captain America: Civil War. When Tony Stark shouted “underoos”, we were introduced to Holland’s version of the friendly neighbourhood hero, instantly winning over the audience with near-perfect Peter Parker charm.

Check out the trailer for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 below!

Since that time, Tom Holland has become the most prolific Peter Parker in cinematic history, not only starring in three Spider-Man movies (with at least a fourth on the way) but also as a supporting character in a number of MCU entries.

So surely, we can’t imagine a life in which Tom Holland as Peter Parker doesn't exist, right? Well, one day we’ll have to come to that realisation and it seems that Holland is preparing to accept the inevitable. This is despite the actor previously claiming that he’ll keep on playing Spider-Man for as long as possible.

When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Holland says that a part of him is ready to leave Spider-Man with reservations that the upcoming fourth movie might not live up to the standards previously set.

“I think we found the reason [to make a fourth movie],” he explained. “I’m really, really happy with where we’re at in terms of the creative. But I’m also a little apprehensive about it."

He continued: “There’s a bit of a stigma about the fourth one in all franchises. I feel like we hit a home run with our first franchise and there’s a part of me that wants to walk away with my head held high and pass the baton to the next lucky kid that gets to bring this character to life.”

We totally see where Holland is coming from. At this point, all three of his standalone Spider-Man movies have been well-received by fans, critics and the box office alike. Yet, nothing in life is guaranteed and it remains to be seen whether the fourth time will also be a charm.

If the fourth Spider-Man movie will be Holland’s last, we hope that it will be yet another success and we have little doubt that it won’t. However, Sony is already preparing for life without Holland it seems, with plans of a Miles Morales movie being in the works.

As for what the immediate future holds, we can at least look forward to Marvel Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games coming to PlayStation 5 on 20 October 2023.
