Harry Potter fans seriously divided over new Hagrid casting: 'I don't see it'

No one can replace Robbie Coltrane

Harry Potter fans are divided over who might be cast as the new Rubeus Hagrid in the upcoming live-action TV series from HBO.

When I look at the potential cast of the Harry Potter reboot, it makes me really sad when I realise just how many of the beloved actors from the original movies are no longer with us.

Check out the Harry Potter trailer below!

Over the years, we’ve lost Dame Maggie Smith (Minerva McGonagall), Sir Michael Gambon and Sir Richard Harris (both played Albus Dumbledore), Alan Rickman (Severus Snape), Leslie Phillips (Sorting Hat), Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy), the aforementioned Robbie Coltrane, and more.

With so many of those actors no longer with us, whoever comes in to step into those voids has big shoes to fill. We’ve already heard rumours as to who might play the next Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape and Minerva McGonagall, but now rumours are making the rounds on who’ll be the next Hagrid.

According to Deadline, Brett Goldstein from Ted Lasso is being considered for the role of Hagrid.

It’s fair to say that fans are divided over the potential casting of Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent in the popular aforementioned Apple TV series. What’s more, fans are not too keen on other casting rumours either.

“I love Brett but I don’t see it,” exclaimed Reddit user Broccoli32.

“He's far too attractive and young-looking. I mean Hagrid in the books was contemporary with Tom Riddle, so he's pushing his 60 to 70s by the time Harry comes to the school,” replied Doom_Corp. “Why would they cast a slightly built 40-year-old as Hagrid?”

“Everything about this is awful,” declared SmarterThanYou1999.

“My excitement about the concept has evaporated with the rumoured casting decisions,” said shadow-1989.

The Harry Potter TV series does not have a release date at the time of writing but it is expected to be released in 2027.
