Batman sequel we were dying to see quietly cancelled

When The Dark Knight Trilogy drew to a close, many of us wondered just how Christopher Nolan’s take on DC’s caped crusader could be topped.

In steps Matt Reeves.

I’m not saying Reeves’ The Batman is better, but it’s certainly on par. If you choose to crown a victor, I shan’t step in your way.

The 2022 release saw Robert Pattinson assume the role of Bruce Wayne, and he did so exceptionally well.

Backed up by a stellar supporting cast and with great direction from Reeves, many of us are eagerly awaiting The Batman Part II, especially following that Joker tease.

Unfortunately, The Batman Part II isn’t slated for release until 2026.

There is something else we can enjoy in the meantime, The Penguin.

Further diving into Colin Farrell’s excellent take on Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin is set to premiere on HBO later this year.

It was initially conceived as a Max original before being ushered under the flagship HBO banner.

For another Reeves spin-off though, it’s the end of the line.

The planned Arkham Asylum series has reportedly been scrapped.

This particular series had already lived a troubled life prior to its cancellation.

It was initially imagined as a show centred around the Gotham City Police Department, much like Fox’s Gotham, before it was decided that the infamous Arkham Asylum would make a better focus.

Antonio Campos was attached to write and direct the series, with Campos’ previous works including The Devil All The Time and The Staircase.

Variety confirmed the show’s cancellation.

They note that the cancellation applies to Campos’ particular vision, adding that a new direction could emerge.

At least for now though, I wouldn’t expect anything to surface.

It’s a shame as Reeves' take on this universe is one of the darkest we’ve seen in a live-action capacity, so an Arkham focused series sounded like a surefire recipe for success.

If the creatives have doubts though, it’s likely best that it doesn’t come to fruition.
