Baldur's Gate 3 Surprise Sequel Announced, The Last of Us Creator Involved

It's official, we're going back to Faerûn

A sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 has officially been announced. It just may not be the one you originally had in mind.

Larian Studios has made it clear that it’s moved on from Baldur’s Gate with the studio in the midst of developing Divinity, a soft reboot of its former series.

That doesn’t mean that we’ve seen the last of Astarion, Shadowheart, Karlach, and company though.

HBO and Hasbro Entertainment have partnered up, announcing a new television show that’ll serve as a direct sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3.

Craig Mazin Will Create Baldur’s Gate For HBO

The series was exclusively announced by Deadline, with the site confirming that Craig Mazin of The Last of Us fame will be serving as showrunner.

Mazin, of course, is a co-creator of HBO’s The Last of Us and continues to serve as showrunner on that project ahead of its third (and possibly final) season.

Deadline confirmed that Mazin will create, write, showrun, and executive produce Baldur’s Gate.

Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor and Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Mano will join him as executive producers.

Wizards of the Coast’s former head of story, Chris Perkins, will act as a consultant on the D&D universe.

As a sequel, Baldur’s Gate will tell a brand new story, albeit one that takes place immediately following the events of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Video Game Cast Could Appear

According to Deadline, the series will feature both new and returning characters with Mazin even reportedly planning on reaching out to the game’s cast.

Neil Newbon as live-action Astarion has to happen, right?

Mazin is reportedly a major fan of the game, having completed Baldur’s Gate 3 on Honour Mode.

“After putting nearly 1,000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created,” Mazin told Deadline.

“I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it.

“I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”

Given that no Baldur’s Gate games are currently in development, Mazin can essentially do whatever he wants with the story - a stark difference to his work on The Last of Us.

It’s reportedly early days on the project for Mazin, so I wouldn’t expect Baldur’s Gate to get a release date anytime soon. We'll update you as soon as we know!

In fact, it could be two years or so before we even arrive at the casting and filming stage.

Still, the tease of being reunited with Faerûn? I’ll take that.
