An update for an upcoming Star Wars movie set to land in 2027 has us feeling somewhat optimistic, which is a nice change.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve adored the Star Wars movies ever since I was a child in the 1980s. Every year, especially around Christmas, I, like many, have a tradition of a Star Wars movie marathon.
That movie marathon includes all the good and the bad. From Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, all the way to the abomination that is Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. Of course, I won't leave spin-off movies out of my tradition, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story being a personal favourite of mine.
Despite the aforementioned The Rise of Skywalker being the last major Star Wars movie that ended on a sour note for many fans, I’m still optimistic with the likes of The Mandalorian & Grogu on the way next year. However, there is another promising movie arriving the following year, and that’s Star Wars: Starfighter, set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

It will be directed by Shawn Levy, and stars Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Amy Adams and Mia Goth. And as the name of Star Wars: Starfighter suggests, it will have a focus on piloting space ships and whatnot. I know, space ships in a Star Wars movie, how shocking is that?

Much hype surrounds Star Wars: Starfighter
During an interview with Shawn Levy by Collider, this recent update may please fans, especially if they’re a fan of the 2022 movie starring Tom Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick, in particular, the talents of Claudio Miranda, the director of photography on Star Wars: Starfighter.

“He likes to design camera platforms that don’t exist. He likes to think about lenses and format in ways that are innovative,” Levy explained. “And so the rigour of his innovative thinking is a huge gift to a Star Wars movie that wants to break some new ground visually and be a visceral kinetic ride, which is the other thing he brings,”
“Claudio, in both Top Gun: Maverick and F1, showed this. His sense of how to put people in the action in a visceral way, not just in an observational way, but a subjective and participatory way, in that cockpit, in that driver’s seat. He does it like no one else does it, and I wanted that superpower for Starfighter.”
So, if you appreciate epic cinematic set pieces and cinematography, hopefully, Star Wars: Starfighter gives us plenty of reasons to be excited.
Star Wars: Starfighter is currently scheduled to be released on 27 May 2027. As for The Mandalorian & Grogu, it has a release date of 22 May 2026.
