The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered is officially out in the wild, and what should have been a slam dunk has actually been quite controversial.
As gamers bicker over whether the new version of the game is actually better than the old version, and others lament over the loss of the old version on Xbox, it’s Starfield that has sneakily snuck up a ranking in a bid to overtake the legendary CD Projekt Red RPG.
Bethesda’s space-faring Fallout-like released to mixed reviews and despite several DLC expansions, it never reached the popularity of Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. It was always going to be tough as a new IP, but given that it was Bethesda making it, many understandably expected more. Recently, one of the Starfield developers, Kurt Kuhlmann, told FRVR that a sequel is probably out of the question despite all the good it could do.
Nevertheless, it’s proving to be quite popular on NexusMods, recently passing into the top 10 most-modded games on the platform. It usurped other Bethesda games like The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Fallout 3.
Advert
Interestingly, this now puts it on track to pass The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in due time. Currently, the third Witcher game has over 213 million mod downloads, and Starfield is quickly catching up with 202 million.
Bethesda has done a lot of the heavy lifting, of course, as all of its games are generally mod-friendly. While The Witcher 3 has official mod support as of an update last year, it’s much easier to tweak and change Starfield, and it’s probably the ideal way to play given so many gripes players have with the game.

The definitive 7 Starfield mods you need for your next playthrough
StarUI
For those who are now tempted to enhance their copy of Starfield for a new playthrough, you should kick things off with StarUI. It’s a simple UI overhaul mod that tidies up your inventory and generally makes it easier to manage/use.
Starfield Combat Overhaul
A more drastic change comes with Starfield Combat Overhaul, which aims to rebalance combat encounters to make them feel a bit more dramatic/engaging. Combat really is one of the weakest parts of Starfield, so this mod is more than appreciated.
Project Warfare
Perfectly complimenting Starfield Combat Overhaul is Project Warfare, which adds 15 new weapons to the game. They can either be found out in the wild or purchased from vendors.
Star Wars Genesis
We couldn’t talk about Starfield mods without bringing up the very best of the bunch. Star Wars Genesis turns one of the weakest Bethesda games of all-time into one of the greatest Star Wars games of all-time. It’s a must-play if you miss the days of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, or still lament the EA Mandalorian game we never got.

Royal Galaxy
They do say variety is the spice of life however. If you don’t like Star Wars, but still want a cool overhaul mod, Royal Galaxy should do the trick instead. It features over 50 mods that make several quality-of-life improvements, address enemy balancing, introduce enhanced weather, and more.
Spaceships Plus
Starfield got a lot wrong, but something it got right was the ship-building mechanic. It’s still incredibly fun to build your own ship and players have gotten really creative with their designs. Spaceships Plus simply makes it easier and more intuitive.
Call Your Ship
We’ve possibly saved the best till last here. Call Your Ship is a feature that could have relieved a lot of the criticism Starfield received when it first released. Being able to summon your ship to your current location rather than trekking all the way back to it isn’t just a time-saver, it just makes sense.
