The world of Lord Of The Rings is filled with incredibly powerful people and monsters, with Gandalf in particular being one of the most powerful of all.

His age and experience only add to his power, but we never really see it fully on display through The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit leading many to wonder what secrets the mysterious wizard is holding back.

With a performance as great as Ian McKellen’s it’s no wonder Gandalf made the Lord Of The Rings films so popular, especially to those who hadn’t read the books

The question has often been asked when you would be able to see Gandalf at his best, specifically his “true form.”

We see this phenomenon in the Lord Of The Ring’s stories when Frodo wears the One Ring, and sees Glorfindel’s otherworldly form for just a moment.

It’s often been theorised that wearing the ring around Gandalf, especially at the end of the trilogy, would be a similar experience, though perhaps the white glow of the other side would be even brighter with him.

Reddit threads have discussed the idea at length, like an old one that saw a comment read: “Didn't it say that Glorfindel revealed himself as an Elf-Lord, implying that he was concealing his power? If so, would Gandalf then be the same? Like you wouldn't see that side of him unless he showed it.”

It’s said the ring wraiths work differently in that regard so perhaps you wouldn’t see anything, just plain old Gandalf, but who knows for sure.

Honestly it’s one of those things that somebody probably asked Tolkien in a letter but the answer was never made public, for the time being all we can do is speculate.

That said there are new Lord Of The Rings films in the works so you never know, maybe we’ll get an answer.
