Naughty Dog have been one of the more consistent developers in the industry over the last decade or more, so it only seems fair that we give them some leeway when it comes to statements made to the community at large.
That said it's never nice when promises don't pan out as intended, and something the developer said a couple of years ago is in danger of coming back to haunt them before long.
As you may remember, Naughty Dog co-president and director of The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part 2, Neil Druckmann, sat down with ComicBook in the earliest knockings of 2023 to talk about the company's release schedule.
Within that interview, he explained how announcing games too early has led to difficulties with work/life balance for staff at the company, as well as adding unnecessary stress more generally.

For a while, the company certainly followed that approach, announcing The Last of Us Remake a little less than three months before release, while The Last of Us 2 Remaster was confirmed just two months before arriving.
Unfortunately, it seems like their next game will break that trend, and we'll be waiting a long time before we get to play it ourselves.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Won't Be Here in 2026
As first reported by the good folks over at VGC, Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet won't be shown in any capacity at The Game Awards this year, and it won't release in 2026 either.

That information is based on a post on social media by Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb, which was later corroborated by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.
The developer is yet to release a new title (outside of remasters and remakes), since the launch of this current generation of consoles, and with the PS6 set to release after 2027, they may go through the entire thing without doing so.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is a sci-fi adventure that follows Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who “ends up stranded on Sempiria – a distant planet whose communication with the outside universe went dark hundreds of years ago.”
Though gameplay will probably be relatively similar to what we have seen from their other games, the developer has confirmed they want to expand significantly on those elements this time around.

It's pretty gutting to know that we won't be getting our hands on the game for so long, but hopefully it's worth it when we finally do.
