The Last of Us Hidden Detail Discovered After All These Years, Message From Devs

If you didn't spot this one yourself, maybe you should get your eyes tested

Even though the first game in the series is almost 13 years old, it seems there are still some easter eggs buried in The Last of Us that are surprising fans to this day…

You would think that, considering it’s been released three separate times now, fans would have already seen every secret buried in The Last of Us dozens of times already.

Although the game originally released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3, The Last of Us also saw a “Remastered” version for the PlayStation 4 in 2014 and also a full remake in 2022 in the form of The Last of Us Part I for PlayStation 5 and PC, so it’s not like the fanbase hasn’t had ample opportunity to find everything that the game has to offer.

Well, it turns out that a lot of fans haven’t seen this very tongue-in-cheek, fourth wall breaking easter egg from Naughty Dog themselves, buried all the way at the end of the game’s final level.

As spotted by user johnnyringo1982 over on the r/thelastofus subreddit, there’s a not-so-subtle clue about your current progress hidden in the Saint Mary's Hospital mission.

Now, you might have to squint a little to make it out, but the vision chart you can find before the end of the level reads “RUNYOURNEARLYTHEREDONTQUIT!”

There are two possible ways you could read this. It either says “RUN YOUR NEARLY THERE DONT QUIT!” or, more likely, “RUN YOU R NEARLY THERE DONT QUIT!”-- either way, the end message is the same: Naughty Dog is quite literally telling you the game is about to end.

I’ll be honest, I think I was too invested in the story at this point in the game to stop and read a random eye chart, so I’ve never spotted this silly little easter egg for myself.

Turns out, based on a few of the comments, I’m not the only one either.

“Damn thats cool asf,” commented user Foreign_Gas_4755.

“I’m be played so many times and never seen this,” replied user JimmyLizzardATDVM.

Kind of glad I didn’t spot this on my first playthrough, though, as it might have taken the edge off the brutal ending that was about to follow.

Huh, now that I think about it, though… this is just before Joel kills Jerry, Abby’s father, which ultimately leads to his death at the start of The Last of Us Part II.

I guess that means you could say this eventually led to the end of one game, but the start of another.
